Who We Are...
[Return] to Table of ContentsSuncoast Epilepsy Association (SEA) is a local, non-profit organization, which is the sole provider of services to individuals with epilepsy in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. The agency was originally chartered by the State of Florida in 1973 and is affiliated with the Florida Epilepsy Service Providers Association (FESPA). The target population that we serve is estimated at 2% of the population or approximately 28,000 Pinellas and Pasco residents. SEA provides medical and dental services to medically and financially needy individuals with epilepsy without regard to race, sex, religion, national origin, creed, or political persuasion.
Individuals who qualify for our services are:
- Individuals diagnosed with epilepsy, or suspected of having epilepsy.
- Residents of the State of Florida living within our service area.
- Individuals who demonstrate a need.

- Clients are expected to contribute to their own medical care based on a sliding-fee scale assessment of their ability to pay.

[Return] to Table of ContentsCASE MANAGEMENT -
- Individual counseling.
- The development of an Individualized Action Plan (IAP). IAP relates to the client's needs, goals, and expected outcomes.
- Referral to other service providers.
- Referral to medical professionals for neurological care, including:
- Initial diagnosis and evaluation.
- Follow-up office visits.
- EEG, CT scanning, MRI, and blood-serum testing.
- Referral to dentists who provide general dentistry and specialized periodontal care for epilepsy related symptoms.
VOCATIONAL SERVICES -
- Individuals with epilepsy that desire employment may receive assistance with:
- Realistic vocational goal setting -
- Helps individuals set goals based on interests, skills, previous experience, training, and job availability in the community.
- Job Seeking Skills Training (JSS) -
- Trains an individual how and where to look for work. It covers such topics as developing a resume, completing a job application, interviewing, interview follow-up, making and developing contacts, researching potential employers, realistic employer expectations, and acceptable work environment practices.
- Job Club -
- A support group that provides structure and support during the job search period.
- Job Search -
- The period of independent job seeking with support of an employment specialist.
- Placement Assistance -
- An Employment Specialist makes employer contacts on behalf of the job-ready candidate that has difficulty making contacts independently.
- Epilepsy prevention and education programs are provided for employers to encourage the employment of QUALIFIED individuals with epilepsy.
ADVOCACY -
- Suncoast Epilepsy Association works to insure equal treatment and access for all people. Clients who desire help with denial of rights or discrimination issues can receive assistance.
PRESENTATIONS and EDUCATION -
- Presentations are available to a variety of public and professional target groups, including law officers, fire fighters, emergency medical responders, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, school personnel, students, substance abusers, the elderly, persons affected by epilepsy, civic groups, service clubs, employers, and the general public.
Prevention and Education Goals...
Seizures can be controlled and some cases of epilepsy can be prevented. Goals of the Prevention and Education Program include:[Return] to Table of Contents
- Prevent seizures by avoiding or eliminating know causes.
- Prevent reoccurring seizures once a single seizure has taken place.
- Prevent any more seizures once epilepsy has been diagnosed.
- Preventing personal and social problems due to lack of understanding in our society.

- Teens with epilepsy.
- Young Adults with epilepsy.
- Parents and care-givers of children and teens with epilepsy.
- Adults with epilepsy.
