What is Reciprocal Borrowing?
Reciprocal Borrowing makes your local library card a passport to borrow from other participating libraries. You are always welcome to use a library's resources within the building. Reciprocal Borrowing extends that welcome. If you have a valid library card from a participating library, you may check out materials from another participating library.
Why Would I Use Reciprocal Borrowing?
If you work in or are visiting a community other than the one you live in, you may have the need or desire to use that community's library. The TBLC Reciprocal Borrowing Program allows you to borrow materials from the library you are visiting provided it and your home library are participants in the program.
What Can I Borrow? When you register your library card at another library, you follow the rules of that library. Each library determines what you can check out on your card, the length of your loans, and fines for overdue, lost or damaged materials. As usual, you are responsible for any fines that you may incur.
How Do I Register?
If your local library is not on the attached list, check with them to see if they have become a TBLC reciprocal borrowing library. A local library card from a participating library is the first step. Present your library card at the library you wish to use and ask about procedures and required identification. Each participating library has its own procedures for registering new borrowers.
How Much Does It Cost?
There is no charge to borrow materials if you have a valid library card and are in good standing with your home library. Libraries may charge for other services, such as making copies or printing from computer work stations.
How Can I Find Out What Is Available At A Particular Library? Most of these libraries participate in Alleycat, a regional online catalog. Visit Alleycat at http://alleycat.tblc.org. You may log in as a guest or use your library card.
Where Do I Return Materials?
Unless the library places a restriction on materials (videos, audiotapes, interlibrary loan, etc.), materials loaned by a participating library may be returned to any other participating library without cost. Make sure to ask before you check out materials!
