Update July 2008:
Founded by the Women's Civic Club of Safety Harbor in 1938, the Library has a long history in the City. The library was housed in two locations prior to the existing one. First, in the Civic Club Community House and then in a larger facility built on land donated by Dr. Salem Baranoff and located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Second Street North. The current 15,000 sq ft Library was opened and dedicated in 1994.
The seeds for expansion of the present Safety Harbor Library were planted some years ago. Expansion needs were highlighted during Focus Long Range Planning Group meetings held in the fall of 2004. Expansion dialogue continued to move forward and the architectural firm of Long & Associates, Inc. was hired. Plans for the expansion began to unfold during public meetings held with the City Commission, Library Advisory Board, local residents, and the architectural firm.
The initial designs call for a 9,300 sq ft addition to the current facility , providing extra public space and new points of service. In these plans, there is a conference room, which will be open for public use, a business center, a story hour room and space dedicated for teens. The meeting room will be enlarged to seat 110 and will be divisible, allowing two groups to meet at the same time, also 4 study/work areas.
The library is excited about the new possibilities offered with the expansion. Several new technologies that we will be offered are WIFI access and a self-check out. Please bookmark this page as we will post updates of the project as they become available.
