The Power of Literature

Dr. Joan F. Kaywell, Professor of English Education at the University of South Florida, is an expert in the field of young adult literature and literacy.

She has won Undergraduate Teaching Awards in 1990-91, 1993-94, 1996-97, and 1999-2000 and USF's Jerome Krivanek Distinguished Teacher Award in 2002. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in English teaching methods and adolescent literature. Dr. Kaywell donates her time extensively to promoting literacy of children, especially those who are both illiterate and in pain, and is best known for two book series, Adolescent Literature as a Complement to the Classics (four volumes), and Using Literature to Help Troubled Teenagers Cope with... Issues [Family / Identity / Health / Societal / End-of Life / Abuse] (a six-volume series).
