On Monday evening, October 9, 2006, the Suncoast Information Specialists celebrated the group's 20th Anniversary with a very special reception at the Stetson University School of Law's beautiful Tampa Campus.
Sixty-five members and guests attended the event, which featured a presentation by nationally known guest speaker Gary Price, director of online information resources for Ask.com. Major sponsors were Tampa Bay Library Consortium (TBLC), which has been a longtime supporter of SIS, and USF's School of Library and Information Science (to which many of our members have ties); both staffed tables with information and giveaways in the registration area.
Everyone enjoyed a bountiful buffet catered by Tampa's well-known Alessi Bakery. Numerous door prizes added to the fun.
SIS President Steve Cannata served as master of ceremonies for the program, which included founding member Betsy King's reading of congratulatory letters from two other key founding members, Judy Dolce Donn and Doug Cornwell, sent their best wishes to the group and talked about the beginnings of SIS. Both had high praise for Betsy and her untiring and valuable contributions to SIS over the 20 years, with Doug describing her as the "glue" that holds the group together.
SIS member Shirl Kennedy, who wears many hats, including one as managing editor of online information source DocuTicker, introduced our keynote speaker, Gary Price, who founded and continues to contribute to DocuTicker and with whom she works closely. Gary held the audience spellbound with his thought-provoking ideas and his tips on of dozens of useful and fascinating free web-based resources. Check out some of his suggested sites by viewing the content of the presentation at http://www.freepint.com/gary/06florida.html. He also introduced his listeners to some exciting new features of Ask.com, which grew out of the former AskJeeves.com. Although Gary spoke for over an hour, everyone could have happily stayed to hear much more. (Gary has already been invited back for an encore; we hope to see him again in the not-too-distant future.)
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, SIS was able to host the event at no charge to attendees (although many made contributions to our donation basket). We are very grateful to all of them: Platinum-Level Sponsors TBLC and USF LIS; Bronze-Level Sponsor Everlove & Associates, and Sponsor Upper Story Books of Tampa. Contributions from TBLC and USF provided the two Grand Prizes of $50 gift certificates for Borders. Additional door prizes were donated by Upper Story Books, which gave us a signed first edition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Known World by Edward P. Jones and a gift certificate, , by Pinellas Public Library Cooperative by SIS members Sandy Hawes and Caroline Reed. We also thank Stetson University College of Law, which generously provided its Tampa Campus facility free of charge as well as the invaluable services of several of its staff members.
In addition to Caroline Reed, who chaired the planning committee, others who worked to make the evening a success were Jean Andrews, Wanda Barrett, Steve Cannata, Alicia Ellison, Sandy Hawes, Shirl Kennedy, Betsy King, Robin Leigh, Harriet Thompkins, and Avis Wilcox. USF LIS students Keri Dunlop and Tara Murphy assisted with a variety of tasks including registration.
