Special Collections Librarianship and the Fine
Arts
Speaker: Keli Rylance, Assistant Librarian, USF Tampa Library
A growing number of special collections librarians have educational
backgrounds in the fine arts. The varied holdings of special
collections departments and special research libraries often include
visual and ephemeral materials that require a strong knowledge of
historical techniques and technologies related to such things as
papermaking, printing, binding, map-making and photography. In
special collections repositories, it is becoming ever more essential
that librarians have an affinity for materials, their properties and
inherent vices in order to safeguard such artifacts for future
users.
