From the Editor
This is issue number 6 of the 2001 edition of the SIS Newsletter. This will be the last issue that I will be editing. I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I’ve really enjoyed being able to make a small contribution to our organization. As I pass the eye shade to the new Editor, I would like to encourage all of you to attend the December meeting to vote for a new slate officers. I would also like to express my thanks to this year’s officers. It’s been a pleasure to work with you all.

October Minutes
The October SIS meeting was held jointly with CFALL and USF SLA/ALA Student Chapters at the USF Tampa Campus Library on October 3, 2001. The meeting included a panel discussion on copyright issues and a tasty lunch catered by Panera.
Ray Eydmann, President, made opening remarks, welcoming SIS members as well as CFALL members and members of the various student organizations that participated. He indicated that the following positions are open for next year’s SIS officer roster:
In addition, SIS is looking for volunteers for the appointed positions of Newsletter Editor and Webmaster. Anyone who would like to participate should contact Ray Eydmann or Wanda Barrett, who is heading the nominating committee.
Barbara Flora, a USF library school student who coordinated the meeting, introduced the panelists. The panelists were:
Barbara Flora initiated the discussion with some questions regarding the panelists’ experiences with violations that may have ended up in court. Although none of the panelists have had to testify in court regarding copyright violations, the questions sparked interesting discussion about other libraries’ experiences throughout the U.S. where the vendors have actually closed access to their electronic products as a result of contract violations.
Other points of discussion included the role of and attitudes towards the Copyright Clearinghouse Center; some of the major cases that have made it to court (there are only a few of them); ramifications of the DMCA; the differences in policies in academic and private sector environments; and the changing attitudes of vendors about licensing of electronic products.
