  • Lisbeth Ann Palmer (Bebe Daniels) is the daughter of a Los Angeles millionaire who is traveling to New York to visit her aunt. On their arrival, she and her chaperone dine at a restaurant and Lizbeth Ann discovers that after she pays the bill she will have less than a dollar left. She makes a bet with the chaperone that she will be able to last out the week on just 75 cents and sets out to prove it. After an unsuccessful attempt to be a flower girl almost ends in her arrest, she catches the attention of Tod Rollins, a wealthy young man (Harry Myers). He convinces his mother (Frances Raymond) to take Lizbeth home with them, but along the way, they just happen to stop at her aunt's home. There, Lizbeth finds someone wearing her clothes and pretending to be her. It's Susie (Helen Jerome Eddy), the associate of Meadows, the butler (Sidney Bracey) -- they're both crooks out to get their hands on some of the Palmer fortune. Lizbeth has fun going along with it all and helping the crooks along -- until she gets the opportunity to expose them. At the end of the week, she has won her bet and won Rollins. This comedy seems like it would be tailor made for Bebe Daniels, but she doesn't quite get the same opportunity to glow as she did in some of her other pictures. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide

Florida Library Association

2002 Annual Conference

The Florida Library Association 2002 Annual Conference will be held April 8-11 in Daytona Beach. Information on registration, accommodations, and program can be found on the FLA Web site at http://www.flalib.org/conf/2002.html . Many sessions are scheduled each of the 4 days. Single day registration is available. There will be an exhibit area for vendors. The keynote speaker is Nancy C. Kranich, Associate Dean, New York University, Bobst Library, and past president of ALA.

Web Search Skills for Know-It-All Web Searchers

On Tuesday, April 9, in cooperation with the FLA Special & Institutional Libraries Section, the Florida and Caribbean Chapter of Special Libraries Association, is sponsoring a workshop on Web Search Skills for Know-It-All Web Searchers, presented by Rita Vine of Workingfaster.com. "Are your favorite web search tools Google, Yahoo! and a couple of other favorites? Do you (or someone you know) think that the world of information is just a keyword search away? If so, you're part of the emerging core of web users, who rely on the same tried and true resources to the exclusion of all others. Experience shows that web searchers can benefit from relying less on search engines and more on other high quality, pre-selected catalogues and directories. The trick is knowing what's good and what isn't worth the paper it's not printed on. In this jam-packed two-part session, Rita Vine of Workingfaster.com will reprise some of the advice she shared at last year's FLA conference, together with tips and tricks for reaching those hard-core search snobs who think they already know everything there is to know about web search." Member Acknowledgements and Kudos

Education America- Tampa Technical Institute, Pinellas Campus passed their reaccreditation from Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology with exemplary results!

Pamela Burdett, Stetson University College of Law, has been named President of the Special & Institutional Libraries committee of Florida Library Association for 2002-2003.

April 2002 Meeting

Dialog has offered to sponsor our April  meeting on Thursday, April 4, at 6:00 pm. A buffet dinner will be served. Robert Childress will present a program on new developments and what is happening with Dialog.

RSVP to kingbet@tampabay.rr.com or leave a voice mail at 813-887-1658 no later than Monday, April 1. In fairness to our sponsor, we need to consider your positive response an obligation to attend, even though there will be no cost to us for the meal. Late reservations will be accepted only as space allows.

The CAE facility is a secured facility, so all attendees must enter the front lobby between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served beginning at 6 p.m. If you can not make it prior to 6:00 p.m., please contact Betsy to make advance arrangements. Anyone arriving late can still get into the building. However, those who anticipate getting here after 6:00 should let Betsy know in advance if possible, so we can be on the lookout for them

CAE is in Tampa, about 2 miles north of Tampa International Airport, near the southeast corner of Anderson Road and Waters Avenue, in Tampa West Industrial Park. The Park is accessible from either Waters Avenue or Anderson Boulevard. Contact Betsy for detailed instructions or see the maps  on the SIS website.

February 2002 Meeting

Anita Lindsay, vice-president/pres elect, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Welcome was kept brief because of the restaurant's din. Fifteen gathered around two tables to share thoughts and good company.

Meetings for April and June were announced:

• Robert Childress of Dialog will host April's SIS meeting at CAE in Tampa.
• June's meeting, Wednesday the 12th at 6:30 at Eckerd College, features Patsy Lieb, former newspaper journalist, writer and author. Patsy maintains the website A Writer's Notebook - a personal website with poetry, feature stories and more (http://www.geocities.com/patsylieb/). She is also responsible for Write On MagazineWrite On Magazine - an online publication and resource for authors (http://www.geocities.com/evmanak/).

The youngest guest, Beth Burress, the 3 month old daughter of member Theresa, slept quietly throughout the meeting. The group disbanded around 8 pm after an evening of good conversation and laughter. A great get-to- know-you meeting. Members present were: Anita Lindsay, Shirl Kennedy, Betsy King, Judy Mullen, CD McLean, Rachel Schneiderman, Rebecca Forman, Tina Neville, Kathy Whitley, Jackie Jackson, Deborah Henry, Pamela Burdett, Theresa Burress, Alicia Ellison, and Ray Eydman.

SIS Officer's Meeting - January 22, 2002

Officers present: Wanda Barrett, President; Betsy King, Treasurer; Rebecca Forman, Newsletter Editor

SIS has $700.92 in its treasury. There were 76 paying members in 2001. As of 1/22/02, 36 members have paid for their 2002 membership renewal.

2002 Schedule:

• The newsletter should be completed by the 1st Wednesday in each month and posted by the 2nd Wednesday.
• Meetings should alternate between Hillsborough and Pinellas County and lunch and dinner.
• In order to move things along more quickly in 2003, we recommend planning the January officer's meeting for the second week in January, and make those plans by the second week in December. The Vice President for 2003 needs to have the February meeting planned by the first week of January and the newsletter should be mailed the second week of January.

SIS Goals for 2002

General:

• clarify duties of officers
• review bylaws
• reach out to other area library groups
• keep members informed of professional development opportunities
• obtain tax ID number and a free checking account
• work on the SIS archive including newsletters, minutes and programs
• begin planning for the 20th anniversary of SIS in 2005
• ease the transition for the new officers in 2003

Newsletters:

• keep members informed of upcoming professional activities such as SLA
• share knowledge gleaned through professional development with other members
• solicit articles of interest, jokes, funny stories, interesting websites
• post news about members
• keep abreast of SLA Spring 2003 workshop

Meetings:

• name tags
• introductions at the beginning of each meeting with members telling about challenges faced, education, etc…
• keep attendance records (secretary)
• include/invite school librarians
• include/invite members of other groups: CFALL, SLA, AALL, TBLC, TABAMLN, ALIS
• Library Information Resource Network (LIRN)
• Blind Services- Computer accessibility in libraries
