IMMERSED IN BASEBALL
Our long-suffering Tampa Bay Rays are having a record-breaking season! Despite a few losses, they are still over .500!
But do you know the important role of our own city in the history of the game? Beginning with the St. Louis Browns in 1914, Major Leaguers have come to the area for Spring Training. While St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Dunedin and Tampa provided them with facilities to work out, the beaches gave them a place to play (and frequently, stay). Such famous names as Jake Ruppert, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Casey Stengel, Max and Hal Lanier, Gussie Busch, Gil Hodges, Del Wilber, Don Zimmer, Eddie Cardieri, Chuck Hiller and some guy named Sidd Finch have hung out at our shore.
To learn more, take a look at the display of photos from the 2005 St. Pete Beach Library/Florida Humanities Council Baseball and the Beaches project, currently on-view in the old Corey Avenue 5 & 10 storefront (#13 on the map in this brochure). |
