General Sources & "Electronic Zoos"


NetVet. A wide ranging collection of veterinary and animal related links including The Electronic Zoo which has dozens of links to most major animal groups including cats, dogs, ferrets, fish, reptiles,marine mammals, invertebrates, (which also includes links for pest management) primates, and amphibians. 

Mammal Species of the World.  Sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, this database explains how the different species of mammals are classified and how they relate to each other. 

Indianapolis Zoo Animal Facts.  Essential facts, accompanied by an image in many cases, about many wild and domestic animal species. Among the latter are ferrets, Australian shepherds and the Maine Coon cat.  Data available for mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, and invertebrates. 

Introduction to the Metazoa.  A descriptive of all animals, arranged by class. 

African Wildlife Foundation's Wild Lives Handbook. This excerpt from the printed publication gives concise, but detailed information about some 45 major African animals. Data provided include diet, habitat, behavior, care of young, scientific and African language name.

National Geographic Publications Index. An online index for (among other resources) over a century's worth of National Geographic Magazines, including many articles and pictures of wildlife. 

 Animal Pictures Archive. Database of over 15,000 animal images. 
 

Electronic Resources on Ornithology.  A very large collection of bird and birding resources, including general sources and those covering particular geographical areas.
The EMBL Reptile Database. A guide to scientific classification of reptiles. Does not include information about the animals (diet, habits, etc) 

Sea World Animal Resource Database. Mainly marine animals, but includes data on certain land animals as well. 

Jane Goodall Institute. Authoritative information on chimpanzees, along with a biography of Dr Goodall and information about her activities. 

Animal Printouts, from Enchanted Learning.  A large collection of animal images and information for students in kindergarten through the third grade. Images are black and white line drawings (suitable for coloring) which show the animals dimensions. Animals are listed by name and by biome. 

Animal Diversity Web: "An online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan." Features: "Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy.Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families. Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part." 

AmphibiaWeb.  "AmphibiaWeb offers ready access to taxonomic information for every recognized species of amphibian in the world. Species descriptions, life history information, conservation status, literature references, photos and range maps are available for many species and are being added to regularly by specialists and volunteers from around the world. In addition, AmphibiaWeb provides easy and fast access to museum specimen data from large herpetological collections. We hope AmphibiaWeb will encourage a shared vision for the study of amphibian declines and the conservation of remaining amphibians." 

All About Nature -- Biomes and Habitats. From Enchanted Learning.  Gives basic descriptions of all the earth's biological zones with information about the animals an plants in each, including diet, reproduction cycle and anatomy. Illustrations provided. 
 
 

 

 

Ethical Issues (Animal Rights, Animal Testing)


Alternatives to Animal Testing. Follow some of these links (which are extraordinarily slow) to some excellent, well thought out papers on animal testing.  The papers presented in the Proceedings to the Pain Management and Humane Endpoints Workshop are particularly worthwhile.


Florida Animals

The Florida Panther Society. A non-profit environmental education and support organization for the Florida Panther.  Includes images, general information, technical reports and links further information 

Manatee Links. A large and well organized collection of resources on the manatee. 

Florida Museum of Natual History Guide to Venomous Snakes. Here you will find color photographs and diagrams along with complete descriptions of the 6 poisonous snakes native to Florida.  The museum's main page has a number of interesting links including image galleries, online publications and virtual exhibits. 

 


 

Endangered Species

Everything Your Need to Know about the Giant Panda. Rated by Encyclopedia as one of the best sites on the web, it provides physical description of the Giant Panda, information about their feeding habits and habitat, breeding, conservation and  history. 

Endangered Species List The Endangered Species List has news articles, lists of species by region (mainly in United States), some international information on endangered species, images of certain endangered animal and plants, and educational resources.

Sea World Animal Resources: Endangered Species. Includes links to other organizations involved in the issue and basic profiles of major endangered species. Site aimed for upper elementary students. 

Earth Endangered. Features galleries of endangered animals, news and links to other resources. 

Environmental Issues--Endangered Species.  Collection of links gathered by About.com relating endangered species in North America and elsewhere, the Endangered Species and international wildlife conservation.


Dinosaurs

Dinosauria Online Includes online journal of dinosaur science; paleontological and anatomical dictionary, maps of ancient Earth and charts of dinosaur species.

Zoom Dinosaurs. A "comprehensive hypertext book" about dinosaurs presented by  Enchanted Learning. Information can be retrieved on dinosaur anatomy, behavior, fossils,  extinction, and classification, as well as data (with drawings) for over 90 individual dinosaurs.

The Marine Mammal Center.  Information resources here for seals, dolphins and several whale species.

Sea World Animal Resources: Killer Whales. Provides scientific classification, habitat and distribution,  physical characteristics, behavior, diet, reproduction, etc. 

Sea World Animal Resources: Harbor Seals.  Provides scientific classification, habitat and distribution,  physical characteristics, behavior, diet, reproduction, etc. 

National Marine Mammal Laboratory. Main site includes an extensive gallery; also has educational link providing basic information about marine mammals. 

OceanLink. "A marine science information sponsored by the Bamfield Marine Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The site contains information on oceans, marine mammals and other aquatic life, a glossary of biological terms and a series of links to other online marine and scientific resources." 

Cetacea. An easy to navigate and authoritative guide to whales, dolphins and porpoises. Within the broad groups information is provided for each species, including popular and scientific names, habitat, behavior and human influnence. Recommended by Library Journal.
 


Fish, Seashells  and Marine Biology

Fish Information Service.  An archive of information about aquariums, including both freshwater and marine fish. 
 
 

Seashells

Identification Guide. Part of of the Seashells.org web site. This link has images and text descriptions of mollusks (the folks who live in sea shells), sand dollars, starfish, sea urchins, sponges, crabs and other life forms found  at the beach 

The Bailey Mathews Shell Museum Sanibel Shells  Located on Sanibel Island the Baily Mathews collection included over 20,000 shells. This online exhibit features shells found on or near Sanibel Island  including some which are difficult to identify. 

World Wide Conchology. A very extensive directory of shell related sites including name databases and galleries. Images are cataloged by scientific name, so a bit of research will need to be done before using the site as an identification guide. 

Seashell-Collector.Com Another very large site devoted to seashell collecting. Again images are grouped by scientific name. 

 

Coral and Coral Reefs, Sea World site which covers scientific classification,  habitat and distribution, physical characteristics,  diet and eating habits, reproduction and the anatomy and physiology of corals and the formation and ecology of coral reefs. 
 

 


 

Pets


Dog Training Club of Saint Petersburg.  Besides information about the club (in existence for more than 40 years) there are also links to other dog related sites such as American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club. 
The Dog Breed Information Center.  The web page is designed to make it easy to find the dog which is best suited for you. Breeds can be selected by name, by size or photo, or by desired characteristic. These included good for apartment life, good child companions, best lap dogs, excellent jogging companions, dogs for allergy sufferers, very light shredders,  low exercise demand, high exercise demand and guard dogs. Photographs are included for most descriptions. Although there are some inaccuracies on the whole this should prove a useful source. 

Feline Information Page. The site covers the history, genetics, breeding and nutritional requirments of the cat. 

Melissa Kaplan's Giant Green Iguana Information Collection. A very large and recently updated set of links dealing with almost everything you need or want to know about iguanas as pets. Make sure to scroll down the screen to see all the links. 

AKC Recognized Breeds. Descriptions of the 147 dog breeds accepted by the Amercan Kennel Club. Breeds can be examined by categoy (hounds, sporting dogs, toy breeds, etc)or by name.  Individual breeds are described within each group; many descriptions are accompanied by illustrations. 

SPCA of Pinellas County. SPCA events, pet tips and adoption information from the Pinellas chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
