Mark Harden's Artchive.  Fast  loading collection of over 2000 art works. 
Artlex: Dictionary of visual art. Defines over 2000 terms. Definitions may included images and links to related web sites. 
Artcyclopedia: The Guide to Museum Quality Art on the Internet. This guides you to images of art works provided by the museums owning them or to online image archives. Site is searchable by artist (5,000 are represented). Many sites are commerical; however major public museums, for example, the Prado in Madrid, also provide concise background information about individual works.

Emily Carr at Home and Work.  Rated four stars by the Encyclopedia Britannica: "Exceptionally well-done exploration of the life and work of the British Columbia artist and author. Features the author's journals and memoirs, an exhibition of more than 400 of her artworks, and a virtual tour of her family's home in Victoria. The room-to-room tour is particularly interesting and the "architectural scavenger hunt" within the tour is quite engaging. "
Art History Resources on the Web.  A portal covering all periods of history and most regions of the world. Booklist Review: "The contents of this award-winning gateway are nicely displayed on the home page, organized under 12 borad topics from prehistory to art of the twentieth century.  .  . What one finds under each subdivision is an extensive collection of links.
AskART. "Extensive information about  30,000 American artists."  Provides biographies, images of the artist's works, and references to books or magazine articles about the artist.
