Basic facts about states and cities
State and Local Government on the Net.  Directory of government created and controlled resources on the Internet. Clicking on a state name will bring up links to its home page, a directory of state offices and links to regional, county, city and town web sites.
State Tax Forms  Links to state revenue offices. Most require Adobe Acrobat to obtain forms online. (See also Taxes on the Virtual Seminole Library)
Library of Congress State & Local Government Links Multiple sources of information, including maps and state and city goverment associations.
Official City Sites. Attempts to collect all "official" city and state web sites. International as well as North American coverage
FindLaw: State Resources   Searchable database (i.e. you can look for specific concepts), includes state laws and constitutions, court directories, law schools and other legal and governmental information for each state. Sources for relocation information
VirtualRelocation.com. Probably the first place to check for relocation information. Major features are: Relocation Tools which include city comparisons (compare your home town to the city you're moving on such items as housing costs,  weather, utility costs, etc.),  classifieds, community profiles, cost of living analysis, tax information and even a relocation therapist; National Relocation Directory, sources for real estate, new construction, jobs, schools, parenting and professional services.
Bizsites-Online Advisor.  Features state economic and business profiles and selected statistical data.
The Right SiteFree access to 1,000, 000 pages of demographic data. Drawn from the 1990 census. Searchable by geographic area (including zip code, only you'll need to use the zip codes in use in 1990).
International Real Estate Digest. Online real estate directory has a directory of real estate links for all 50 states and for 115 different countries
Pacific Information Resources Guide to State Databases. A directory of more than 6935  public record databases, including  those maintained by the Federal government, private agencies and state governments.
Public Records Data Online. A directory of state and local (mainly county) public record databases searchable via the Web.
The Right to Know Network.  The RTK network gives free access to several databases dealing with the environment, housing and sustainable development.  Two of its uses are locating sources of toxic pollution in a given area and profiles of bank lending practices.
Occupational Employment and Wage EstimatesEstimates hourly and annual pay for most occupations by geographical area (national, state and standard metropolitan area) The site to visit if you want to find out how much you could expect to make in a different part of the country. 
Unclaimed Property Page.  This very useful site explains how property or assests becomes lost, what it is, what happens to unclaimed property and how to go about finding and reclaiming it. Its most useful feature is a directory of state and national unclaimed property offices including web links when available.
Real Estate Journal: The Wall Street Journal's Guide to Property. Relocation ToolsFree detailed reports covering school, mortgage qualifiers, crime, etc.
Population Connection Kid Friendly Cities. This profiles  cities with populations over 100,000 broken down by major cities, suburban cities or independent cities. Information is given about the social, educational, economic and physical environments of the selected cities.
BestPlaces.net. Offers head to comparisons of cities covering such areas as housing costs, school expenditures, crime rates, job growth and climate.. Also gives six month climate profiles for 2000 cities world wide, and also features articles covering relocation information.
Domania.Com Home Price Check.  Database of over 21,000,000 U.S. home purchase price records. Does not include all states. Frequently updated.
EPA "Where You Live" Local enviromental and pollution information from a variety of interactive EPA databases.
