Legal Self Help
These sites are intended to answer basic legal questions for the layperson.  They cover a range of legal topics and may include links to legal forms and guides for locating an attorney.

Nolo Law Centers. Created by Nolo Press, a publisher of legal self-help books and software since 1971. Written in plain language, the site covers over 20  major areas of interest, including wills and estates,  retirement, small business, employment law,  intellectual property,  landlord and tenant,  family law and personal injury. Other features include a legal encyclopedia, an archive of answers to frequently asked questions ("Ask Auntie Nolo") and guides to legal research. The latter includes both the sources (statues and court cases) and a legal research tutorial.

ABA LawInfo.org  Started in August 2001 by the American Bar Association, Information is arranged in 8 broad categories (e.g. "Your Family," "Your Job," "The Courts," etc.) A notable feature is "When and how to use a lawyer." Note: a number of the links on the site require Adobe Acrobat Reader.

FindLaw for the Public FindLaw, which is produced by the major legal publishing house Westlaw, offers two sets of free legal resources, one for consumers and one for small businesses. Tools for consumers include online legal dictionaries, guides to the court system, hiring an attorney and guides to legal costs. For the small business person the site provides legal information for starting a business as well as guides for planning and managing the business.

 

Legal Forms
Links here include standard legal forms for personal and business use.

The 'Lectric Law Library has an extensive collection of legal forms divided into two groups: law practice forms and business and general forms

FindForms. Created by a California attorney this includes both free forms and forms that require payment. Covers most common legal issues.

FindLaw-Forms.  Please note this site is intended for legal professionals. On it you can locate and download court forms for federal appellate, district and bankruptcy courts and for state courts. NB! You may need to know the name of certain forms in order to retrieve them. Forms are generally require Adobe Acrobat to download and read.
 

"Virtual  Law Libraries"
These provide links to online statues, court opinions and other legal resources for most jurisdictions; federal, state and international

ALSO (American Legal Sources On Line). A comprehensive guide to North American legal sources available at no charge on line.
Covers federal law of United States, Canada, and Mexico and the law in individual U.S. and Mexican states and Canadian provinces. Includes statues, appellate court decisions, legal commentary (electronic law journals and discussions of current legal issues such as the Tax Payer Relief Act of 1997 or the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1994), and practice.

Cornell Legal Information Institute Offers recent and historic Supreme Court decision, Federal Rules of Evidence and Civil Procedure and federal, and international legal material. The Legal Information Institute has one of the better links to the United States Code.

United States House of Representatives Internet Law Library has a vast array of government legal sources, including the United States Code, the Code of Federal Regulations, state and territorial laws (including laws of Indian nations and tribes) laws in other countries and laws in many jurisdictions arranged by subject. On May 29, 1999, the House of Representatives removed the Internet Law Library from its web site after providing copies of  its contents to others interested in hosting the site. This version is hosted by the 'Lectric Law Library.

World Wide Web Virtual Law Library Maintained by Indiana University School of Law Library, a comprehensive and current directory of legal resources on the World Wide Web.

Stetson University's College of Law has two very interesting links on their home page (http://www.law.stetson.edu/) The first is a set of law related Internet utilities (http://www.law.stetson.edu/search/default.htm) which include legal search engines, directories of legal web sites and general Internet search sites. The second is a comprehensive directory of online legal resources including Federal law, Florida Law, laws of other states, law by subject, international law, municipal code, legal forms, attorney directories, law firm web sites, legal dictionaries, etc.

The Internet Legal Resource Guide
"A categorized index of 3100 select web sites in 238 nations, islands and territories, as well as more than 850 locally stored web pages and other files, this site was established to serve as a comprehensive resource of the information available on the Internet concerning law and the legal profession, with an emphasis on the United States of America. Designed for everyone, lay persons and legal scholars alike, it is quality controlled to include only the most substantive legal resources online. The selection criteria are predicated on two principles: the extent to which the resource is unique, as well as the relative value of the information it provides."

FindLawA searchable directory of legal web sites, including access to U.S. Supreme Court decisions.

Full-text state statutes and legislation on the Internet "This page seeks to link to sites containing full-text state constitutions, statutes (called codes or compiled laws in some states), legislation (bills, amendments and similar documents), session laws (bills that have become laws), and administrative rules"

Web Guide to U.S. Supreme Court Research. A comprehensive collection of links, including opinions, briefs, oral argument, history, biographical information and news and commentary.

Law Library of Congress. Includes multinational legal databases. The nations of the world links to information on all countries' constitutions and branches of government.
 

 

Specific Legal Areas
Here you will find web sites devoted to particular legal issues, such as disability law, wills or administrative law
Crash Course on Wills and Trusts. A well organized and easy to navigate  guide to the essentials of estate planning.

United States Bankruptcy Courts.  "Federal courts have exclusive jurisdiction over bankruptcy cases. Bankruptcy cases cannot be filed in state court. Each of the 94 federal judicial districts handles bankruptcy matters. The primary purposes of the law of bankruptcy are: (1) to give an honest debtor a "fresh start" in life by relieving the debtor of most debts, and (2) to repay creditors in an orderly manner to the extent that the debtor has property available for payment." Site includes "Bankruptcy Basics" (72 page pdf file) and official bankruptcy  forms. These require Adobe Acrobat reader to download.
 

Uncle Sam-Administrative Law. Another great collection of web links from the University of Memphis Government Documents Library. There are links for specific Federal agencies as well to the major collections (e.g., the Federal Register) and to other large sources.

ACR Internet Access to Administrative Rules.  A directory of all available online state and Federal administrative regulations. Access is provided, when possible, to weekly or daily  bulletins (e.g., The Federal Register), the complete code of regulations and documents written to guide rule making agencies. This is the link to the Florida Administrative Code, which is not accessible from this site.

Other States, Laws and Landlords. Provided by the New Hampshire Property Owners Association this is a quick way of locating the eviction, landlord and tenant, and security deposit laws for most states..

A guide to Disability Rights Laws. An overview of Federal disability laws produced by the Department of Justice.

Disability Law Update.  Source for recent cases dealing with disability law, particularly the Americans with Disabilties Act. Information is also provided for state laws and for specific conditions and situations.

Law Enforcement Sites
The Police Officer's Internet Directory. A large collection of web sites for professional law enforcement officers, students of criminal justice and citizens. (Site added September 7 1998)

The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), "a nonprofit organization operating out of  Washington, DC, prepares analytical reports for the media, the public, and Congress on issues concerning capital punishment. A state by state listing clearly outlines and compares the legislation and the statistics for capital punishment nationally. A comprehensive list of links to other sources of information is also provided. "

Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics. Compilation of data on all aspects of criminal justice, presented in more than 600 tables drawn from over 100 sources. Note: you will need to have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer to read most of these tables. 

Lawenforcementjob.com Offers employment information on over 4,000 municipal police, state police and patrol, sheriff, federal,international,corrections, university and college departments. Also has an employment message board. It is a place where job seekers and members of  the law enforcement community can exchange employment information. 

Institute for Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS) Web Links. A very comprehensive collection of law enforcement resources divided among law enforcement agencies, drugs and crimes, government, law, public policy and research.

Florida Legal Information
Florida State Courts. Guide to Florida's court system. A notable feature is the Self-Help section which includes family law rules and opinions, legal forms used in family law cases, consumer services provided by the Florida Bar, legal aid phone numbers and a directory of legal web links.
