CAPHIS (Consumer and Patient Health Information Servic)--Web Sites You Can Trust. Created by the Medical Library Assocation, this is a directory of 100 selected and reviewed medical web sites arranged in broad categories, including drug information,  kids health, men's health issues and women's health issues. 

Centers for Disease Control.  On this site you can information about the roles and missions of the CDC, CDC news releases, statistical data, and information on diseases and other health related topics. Health Topics A-Z  has information on subjects ranging from the mundane (airbages) to the exotic (Yersinia enterocolitica)

MEDLINEplus "MEDLINEplus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MEDLINEplus brings together, by health topic, authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other government, non-profit and other health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MEDLINEplus and give easy access to the medical research literature. It also provides you with a database of full-text drug information and an illustrated medical encyclopedia."

.Dr Koop's Communty.  Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has recently launched a web site which includes medical and drug information and will rates medical web sites for quality and accuracy.

National Institutes of Health Information Sources Includes links to the National Cancer Institute, free Medline (the online database of the National Library of Medicine probably the largest available index to medical periodical literature) NIH consumer publications, and information about research at NIH.

Karolinska Institute has a very large collection of sources on diseases and other biomedical areas. Includes behavioral and mental disorders. The Karolinska Institute was designated by Alfred Nobel to award the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

National Organization of Rare Disorders, Inc. "Charitable network of nonprofit organizations serving people with rare physical disorders. Includes information on the patient services and clinical research programs supported by the organization, newsletters, a linked list of member organizations, action alerts for advocates, a calendar of events, and databases covering rare diseases, health and medical

 Quackwatch: : Your Guide to Health Fraud, Quackery, and Intelligent Decisions. This web site deals with questionable health practices and procedures, and includes articles (some short, some detailed) on many popular "alternative
medical"  topics and practioners.

 Ask Doctor Weil. Includes an archive of answers from the popular advocate of holistic medicine and his guide to 8 weeks to better health.

Mayo Clinic Health Oasis. Brief, clearly written and authoritative information on a wide variety of medical and health related subjects. Updated daily.

National Woman's Health Information Center. Covers both physical disorders and family situations (e.g. "the sandwich generation" problem). Provides links to Federal government and non-government information resources.  Also has a directory of answers to frequently asked questions about a large number of women's health topics.

Adam.com. Consumer oriented health site. Concise health and medical information provided for children, women and men; brief information on diseases and disorders, current health news. An outstanding feature are color illustrations of some 40 common surgical procedures.

Ask NOAH: About Health Topics and Resources. An outstanding collection of health relatered information produced by a consortium of New York libraries and medical institutions including the New York Public Library, the New York Academy of  Medicine, the City University of New York and the Metropolitan  New York Library Council

American Geriatrics Society. PDR.net for Consumers. Free registration is required to access part of this site; other sections require payment. Free and immediate access is available for PDR's Getting Well Network,  a source of information on a variety of medical conditions, clinical trial information, and information about medical professionals, health plans and hospitals.

ClinicalTrials.gov.National Institutes of Health site providing information (currently) about over 4,000 clinic trials. Cancer and Treatment Information Produced by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Information on the major forms of cancer, such breast, colon, skin and prostate cancers.

OncoLink The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center has long been recognized as being one the best sources for cancer information on the Internet. Currently the site includes an "Editor's Choice Link" where they list the best sources for cancer information found on the Web each month; disease oriented menus, where information about particular types of cancer for children and adults can be found; specialty oriented menus covering topics such as bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, pain management and radiation therapy; clinical trials; sources of support for the cancer patient and frequently asked questions about cancer.

CancerNet The National Cancer Institute's online information center. Delivers information for the patient, health care professionals and basic researchers. Its PDQ® database is an excellent source of information about many different forms of cancer.

British Columbia Cancer Agency Uncoventional Therapies Manual. "This manual (3rd ed., 2000) offers tips on evaluating alternative cancer therapies and objective information about 46 of the most popular alternative treatments. The entries for each therapy include information from advocates of the treatment balanced by evidence-based evaluations from the professional medical literature. This is most useful for patients who wish to integrate complementary/alternative therapy into their cancer treatment."

British Columba Cancer Agency Patient Cancer Information Database.Describes the various kinds of cancer including number of cases, signs and symptoms, possible causes and risk factors, diagnosis, stages and treatment.

British Columbia Cancer Agency. Cancer Drug Information,. Describes a large number of drugs used for treating cancer. Descriptions include how the drug is administered,   management, side effects and indications of possible complications.

Center for Disease Control Diabetes Home Page Provides information for persons with diabetes and for health care professionals; statistical information and links to other diabetes related sites.

American Diabetes Association Home Page Provides fact sheets and information on current research. Also gives locations for state and local Diabetes Association offices.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases offers a number of online publications on diabetes here.

Diabetes In America 2nd edition A compilation of epidemiological, public health, and clinical data on diabetes and its complications in the United States, published by the National Diabetes Group of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Diabetic Lifestyle Online Magazine Information for managing diabetes (cooking, diet and exercise tips; help for diabetic children and teens; latest medical information). Some information is freely available; others require a subscription.

Joslin Center Diabetes Center. Affiliated with the Harvard Medical School, this has been an important diabetes research center since 1898. Its Online Diabetes Library may be particularly helpful for general information, management, treatment options, nutrtion, medications and complications.

National Stroke Association  Voluntary organization devoted exclusively to stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, research, rehabilitation and support for stroke patients and their families.

Doctor's Guide to Stroke Information & Resource   Reports on latest research in stroke and related disorders; basic information about stroke including answers to frequently asked questions  and links to other Internet sources.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke  has several online publications related to the cause, prevention and treatment of stroke.

CDC National Aids Clearinghouse.   "The CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse's services are

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™  "In response to public concern of the safety of pharmacy practices on the Internet, the association developed the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) program in the spring of 1999. A coalition of state and federal regulatory associations, professional associations, and consumer advocacy groups provided their expertise in developing the criteria which VIPPS certified Pharmacies follow.To be VIPPS certified, a pharmacy must comply with the licensing and inspection requirements of their state and each state to which they dispense pharmaceuticals. Indexes to Medical Periodicals
The most current and authoritative medical and health information can be found in journals where medical researchers report their findings to their professional colleagues.  Medline, produced by the National Library of Medicine, is one of the world's oldest and largest indexes of the medical and health periodical literature can accessed for free at the National Library of Medicine's PubMed site Two of the most famous  American medical journals,  JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) and The New England   Journal of  Medicine,  can be found at least in part on the World Wide Web.  JAMA  can be found here;The New England Journal of Medicine  here Seminole Library and Saint Petersburg College both subsribe to several health related periodical databases which provide full text articles from several hundred medical journals These can be searched by going to the Research Databases section of the library's web site.

Physican and Hospital Directories (and Hospital Ratings)
AMA Physician Select provides basic information on almost every licensed physician in the United States,  including doctors of medicine (MD) and doctors of  osteopathic medicine (DO), and doctors who are not members  of the AMA. 

1999 Guide to Hospitals in Florida. General information about Florida's 200 short term hospitals followed by inpatient statitical data for 16 services lines (e.g. cardiac care) for the years 1995 and 1996/

American Hospital Directory.  Locate and obtain basic information  about hospitals throughout the United States. 

Ecin Extended Care Information Network. This a directory of  nursing homes, home health care agencies, hospices, retirement communities, pediatric facilities and long term care institutions. It is national in scope with some 40,000 institutions listed in over 8,500 cities. The site does not rate or evaluate the facilities. Another feature is a link a an e-mail newsletter the ECIN Newsletter. 

HFCA -Nursing Home Compare. Summaries of inspection reports on every Medicare or Medicaid certified nursing home in the country. Facilities can be located by state, county, zip code, city or by the name of the facility. Reports include ownership, contact information and the results and date of the last inspection. Scope and severity of care deficiencies are given in graphic form.
