David Leip's Atlas of Presidential Elections. A wonderful site covering both the current (year 2000) presidential election and presidential elections from 1860 to 1896. 
Information about the current elections includes candidate data, their positions on the issues and primary election results; the section on past elections gives candidates, state by state results (county by county for elections from 1960 to 1996) presented in text and with  interactive maps.

Project Vote Smart.  Tracks positions of  over 13,000 elected officials.

National Political Index.   Online political information grouped in over 30 categories.

Politics 1.  Comprehensive directory for candidates, elections, political parties and campaign issues
 

 The Center for Responsive Politics.  Track campaign contributions for congressional and other candidates. The CRP site has numerous political databases covering politicians, political action committees, political parties, states and campaign regulations. The databases cover congressional travel, PACs, lobbyists, incumbent financial profiles and interest groups. You can even search for who slept at the White House or had coffee there in 1996.

The Gallup Organization. Not just, although mainly,  political issues are featured on the web site of the nation's oldest and most famous polling organization. Polls included here date back to January 1997. Polling techniques are explained as well.

"This handy service from American Online provides background and contact information for federal and state elected officials based on the zip code entered. Detailed information on key congressional measures and voting in U.S. Congress are also presented. 

Public Agenda Online: The Inside Source for Public Opinion and Policy Analysis. A nonpartisan citizen education organization  covering topics from abortion to social security Each issue includes background material, different perspectives on the issue, major public concerns, sources and resources and major proposals.  It also gives "red flags" that provide cautionary notes about surveys.
