Seats still available for our Tax Reform conversation

Monday, June 25th, 2007

June 29, 2007
1 to 3:45 p.m.

The Florida Legislature is scheduled to meet in Special Session June 12-22 to “reduce and/or restructure ad valorem taxes.” Though there is uncertainty about which of the proposals the legislature will select, there is little doubt that they will reduce taxes and local government revenue and that it will affect libraries.

With the Special Session ending June 22, things should be sufficiently clear by June 29 for local governments and library administrators to assess the legislature’s actions and identify the implications for their communities, and, hopefully, libraries and library budgets.

There appears to be agreement for administrators to get together to discuss the tax issue and find out how their colleagues are responding to budget reductions.

Click here for more information or to sign up.

AGENDA
The Revisions – What exactly did the legislature do?
Implications for Libraries – How are the revisions affecting libraries and library budgets?
Creative Library Responses – How are libraries adjusting to budget reductions, and are there innovative responses that others can benefit from?

SAVE THE DATE!
Any Means Necessary: Beyond Interlibrary Loans
Monday, Sept. 24, 2007
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Crowne Plaza
10221 Princess Palm Ave.
Tampa, FL 33610

Does your patron want something you don’t have? You may soon have hundreds of new ways to obtain it for him. Join us to discuss the exciting future of interlibrary loans, which includes getting materials for our patrons quickly and by any means necessary, and delivering those materials to our patrons in a way that is most convenient for them.

This could mean ordering a DVD from Netflix and having it mailed directly to the patron’s house, or purchasing a book from Amazon.com and giving the patron the option of keeping it or offering it to circulation.

To stay relevant in a world where our patrons can get anything they want with the click of a mouse, we must consider going drastically above and beyond traditional interlibrary loans to get them what they want.

More information is coming soon, but in the meantime, be sure to mark this on your calendar!

Come see our TBLC quilt

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

All of us at the TBLC would like to give a special thank you to Joyce Pelegrina, our administrative services assistant. Joyce spent many hours designing and sewing a beautiful quilt out of the TBLC t-shirts we’ve had over the years, including the first TBLC polo from 1998.

The next time you visit TBLC headquarters, please ask to see it! It’s on display in the north wing of our building.
