Friday, September 21st, 2007

The Travel Grants (six to be awarded) make it possible for library support staff to attend the ALA Annual Conference to be held in the summer of 2008 in Anaheim, Calif.

Sage Publications donates six grants of up to $1,000 to cover the expense of attending the conference which includes airfare, three nights lodging and conference registration for each recipient. Library support staff who currently are employed in a full-time support staff position, have a minimum of three years of experience in an area of technical services (acquisitions, cataloging, collection development/management, preservation of library materials, serials) and have not previously attended an ALA annual conference are eligible for the grants.

Successful candidates will be required to submit a brief report describing their experiences at the annual conference.  This report will be published in the post-conference issue of the “ALCTS Newsletter Online” and also will be shared with the sponsor.

To apply, send a letter addressing the application criteria, brief resume and a short statement (ca. 250 words) outlining why attending the 2008 ALA Annual Conference would be beneficial. A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor, indicating the employer’s support for the application, also is required. The Hollywood Librarian at the USF Lakeland Library

Monday, September 17th, 2007

The Library of the University of South Florida Lakeland is proud to present The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians on Film during Banned Books Week in October. This is the first movie on the subject of the real lives and actual work of U.S. librarians. The Hollywood Librarian was completed in May 2007, and had its red-carpet premiere at the American Library Association annual conference in Washington, D.C., on June 22, 2007. Using the entertaining and appealing context of American movies, the film will hold some surprises for people who may think they know what librarians do. Instead of a commercial release, the film is distributed to libraries to bring attention to the 2007 edition of Banned Books Week and to censorship, the freedom to read and the work of libraries and librarians.

Two showings: Tuesday, October 2 at 6:15 p.m. and Friday, October 5, at 1:15 p.m.

Location:
USF Lakeland, LTB Auditorium (LTB 1100). Group discussions will follow immediately.

Tickets:
Tickets are on sale at the USF Lakeland Cashier’s Office (LTB 1135).
The Office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Ticket sales on October 2 for paying audience will stop promptly at 6 p.m.
Accepted methods of payment are cash or personal check.

Costs:
Free for library employees (proof of employment at a library/as a librarian or proof of current status as a student at a library science school allows free admission).
$8 for adults (age 12 through 60);
$5 for students with valid student ID, children and seniors (61+).
Children 6 and under are free.

We suggest that you procure your tickets in advance as seating is limited.
Part of the proceeds benefits the USF Lakeland Library.

You are all invited to come. The USF Lakeland Library is one of the only two libraries showing this film in Florida so don’t miss your chance to view it!

SPARC Discovery Awards

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

The Internet gives new meaning to the notion that, by sharing ideas, we build a better understanding of the world around us. If you use YouTube or Wikipedia, exchange gaming tips on the Internet, or have a blog, you probably well understand the value of sharing information, ideas, and knowledge.

Sharing can also be a vital tool in helping to address complex problems that challenge society – like disease, hunger, global warming, and economic disparity. The sharing of ideas gives us ways to discover, collaborate, and create in unprecedented ways.

The SPARC Discovery Awards challenges you to illustrate in a short video presentation what you see as the value of sharing information. Use your imagination to suggest what good comes from bringing down barriers to the free exchange of information.
