The Surreal Landscape:
Information Professionals Mastering the Challenges of Time & Space
Join your colleagues for an exciting conference experience scheduled at the end of February in sunny St. Petersburg, Fla., at the beautiful Hilton Carillon.
SARC is hosted every three years by the chapters of the South Atlantic Region of SLA and the 2008 conference is one you won’t want to miss. Keynote speakers are SLA President-elect Steven Abram and Dr. Graham Farmelo, Senior Research Fellow at the Science Museum in London. Dr. Farmelo is an international consultant in the public dimensions of science and is author of a forthcoming book on noted scholar and Nobel Prize winner, Paul Dirac. In addition to many other interesting speakers (possibly even a NASA astronaut!) there will be panel discussions ranging from the challenges of creating new libraries from scratch, “going digital,” and Second Life in the library and instruction world.
Keeping with the theme of the conference, a special evening event at the world-famous Salvador Dali Museum is planned the evening of the 28th. Click here for a sneak preview of the museum.
Make plans to attend SARC IV and note these two upcoming deadlines: early-bird registration for the conference ends *January 15, 2008* and special rates at the Hilton Carillon (a first-class business hotel, wireless throughout) end *January 27*.
Coming Jan. 14!
We are taking steps to enhance Delivery by implementing a new barcode label system, which is essential for better tracking, more accurate statistics and vendor accountability for lost or late items.
Starting Jan. 14, we will be in the beta testing stage of this new process.
What does this mean for your library?
Libraries only in Fort Myers and Tampa will implement the new barcode label system on Jan. 14. All participating libraries in these areas should have received instructions on implementation. If your library did not receive them, please contact deliver@tblc.org.
All other libraries should continue handling everything as you normally do. Just be aware that you will be receiving barcode labels from Fort Myers and Tampa Delivery bags. The driver will know how to handle these.
If our beta testing stage is successful, we will start implementing the barcode system at all of our other Delivery locations as soon as possible. We will keep you updated on our progress.
Email deliver@tblc.org or call (800) 622-8252 with any questions or comments.
Are You Feeling The Pressure?
The Ratcheting Up of Academic Library Technology
Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
In a technology landscape in which gadgets, gizmos, software and Web 2.0 innovations hit us at an ever accelerating pace, how do we successfully manage technology adoption in our libraries? This workshop addresses the challenge of the technology ratchet, and how to keep it from tightening its grip around your staff and patrons.
Steven Bell will share ideas and techniques for regaining control over library technology with an exploration of how we might better identify and adopt the technologies that are right for our libraries, how we can more effectively offer staff development for using those technologies, and how each staff member can develop a personal professional development strategy for staying ahead of the technology curve.
