Your Input Needed

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

The Area Agency on Aging has entered into a partnership with public libraries in Florida this year, in order to provide information and assistance to seniors. Five video components have been assembled in order to provide library public service staff and patrons with new resources to access government and community information.

Your input is very valuable to us. If you would take a few minutes to review each component and respond to some survey questions, your comments will help us to finalize a prototype for the Area Agency on Aging/Public Libraries Partnership for Seniors. The prototype is under development and will be a webpage with Agency videos, forms and tutorials.

With your input, the prototype will also be utilized by the Florida E-Government Work Group as a template for any government or community agency that would like to partner with Florida public libraries.

The deadline to respond to this survey is May 1. If you need assistance or have any questions, please email Catherine Cottle at catherine_cottle@yahoo.com.

This project is brought to you by USF School of Library & Information Science, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, the Area Agency on Aging and the Pasco County Library Cooperative.

The survey includes a link to the video components.  The survey is here.

Rethinking Resource Sharing Innovation Award winners announced

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Three winners of the 2009 Rethinking Resource Sharing Innovation Awards were announced on April 15. Representing the best examples of innovative thinking in resource sharing, the award recipients include the Orlando Memory Project, Rapid ILL and Kentucky Libraries Unbound.

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative Innovation Awards honor each of these organizations for improving patrons’ access to library information through resource sharing. Each award winner receives a $1,000 cash award and will be recognized for their resource sharing efforts on May 13 at the Rethinking Resource Sharing Forum 2009, in Dublin, Ohio.

Funding for the 2009 Innovation Awards is provided by the Alliance of Library Service Networks, a group of U.S. independent regional networks that includes Amigos, BCR, FEDLINK, ILLINET, INCOLSA, MINITEX, MLC, MLNC, NELINET, Nylink, OHIONET, Lyrasis and WiLS. The Nebraska Library Commission is also a member. OCLC and BCR provide on-going support for the initiative.

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative is an ad hoc group that advocates for a complete rethink of the way libraries conduct resource sharing in the context of the global Internet revolution and all of the developments that have arisen from that. The group is advocating for a revolution in the way libraries conduct resource sharing.

TBLC announces Delivery ITN decision

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

It has been a really exciting process, and I wanted to bring you up to date with the status of our ITN for the Statewide Delivery System.  We received nine vendor bids and after careful consideration, we have decided to stay with Velocity Express.

A bit of trivia since many people have asked – the cost of UPS was a minimum of 1 MILLION dollars!

With this new contract, we were able to lower the total cost of Delivery.  This means we can actually reduce the cost to libraries!  We will decrease costs by $150 per stop.

As a result of the new contract, we are able to offer smaller libraries the ability to have two days of service per week for the cost of one, allowing us to eliminate one-day stops.  This benefits the Delivery system as a whole, as items will have a quicker turnaround time to and from small libraries.

The pricing for October 2009 – September 30, 2010 is:

2-day stop:  $600
3-day stop:  $1,800
4-day stop:  $2,400
5-day stop:  $3,000

Additionally, we will change the following policies based upon the Statewide Delivery Taskforce recommendations and negotiations with the vendor starting on October 1, 2009:

- Lost Items.  Delivery will no longer pay for lost items.  It will pay for damaged items or egregious loss.
- Scanning.  We will discontinue the bag level scanning.  Scanning of Electronic Signatures by drivers and labels on demand will continue.

Renewal letters will be sent to each participating library’s director reflecting these changes in May.  Please contact TBLC at (813) 622-8252 with any questions about the renewal or Delivery in general.
